Bang For Buck Desktop Solid-State Amplifier 2025
In our review of the Topping DX5 II, we compared it to more expensive competitors, and yet, the DX5 II is still competitive at those higher price brackets. On its own tier level, it’s almost unbeatable.
Topping has a winner here in 2025. The compact desktop Topping DX5 II DAC and headphone amplifier produces lots of clean power, showcases lots of valuable features, and has a customizable UI to boot.
However, the feature that we like the most is the PEQ, which can transform the DX5 II into a fun machine that can mold itself to your personal preference
Bang For Buck Desktop Tube Amplifier 2025
The visually striking xDuoo DM-01 is as much a decorative novelty as it is a serious desktop amplifier and DAC. Its hybrid tube design skillfully balances organic warmth with impressive resolution and dynamic performance.
While its control scheme and limited compatibility with more sensitive IEMs leave something to be desired, the DM-01 offers a comprehensive range of input options, allowing easy connection to phones, laptops, consoles, and CD players with minimal hassle.
For those seeking a convenient and versatile way to experience the legendary tube sound in 2025, the DM-01 is worth a listen, and you might find yourself charmed by its quirky retro aesthetics along the way.
Bang For Buck Desktop DAC 2025
Coming in at under $100, the SMSL D1 desktop DAC provides solid value with a typically higher-end ROHM BD34352EKV decoding chipset, good dynamics, and a sleek form factor.
It is by no means perfect; its touch-sensitive controls and glossy front panel may attract fingerprints, and those sensitive to treble may find it to be a little sibilant.
But at $79.99, the D1 is a decent little DAC in 2025 for those building their first Hi-Fi setup or those who just want a compact yet capable DAC.

No matter the input, the BR15 R2R paired with a wide range of speakers seamlessly, whether it was the FiiO SP5 or the Absolute 4P.
The sound coming out of either was about as neutral as it gets, and yet, still musical. The BR15 R2R presented what was played without overriding the underlying sound of the source music.
That is about as good as it gets in 2025 when inserting a unit such as the FiiO BR15 R2R into your system.
The BR15 R2R will be a regular in one of our home systems now and does so without apology.

The Cayin RU9 takes a legacy form factor, mixes it with modern audiophile needs to create a DAC/Amp with impressive, yet very ‘tweakable’ sound, excellent power output, and all inside a low-profile yet extremely sturdy design.
The RU9 can stack as a traditional amp or dangle like a dongle, plus bring in the headphone user with that additional grunt that no dongle possesses.
It’s also better sounding than the N3Ultra. Use the N3Ultra if you want a good-performing local playback unit with tubes. However, with OTG to a smartphone and DC Mode, the RU9 opens up a much broader environment for connections and accessing your content.
We would hesitate to call the RU9 a modern audiophile solution from scratch because stackable micro amps have been around for ages.
Rather is a traditional idea, infused with modern features, and Cayin’s excellent timbre/power mode system that makes it ideal for portable audiophile needs in 2025.

The Sennheiser HD 550 is a versatile, likable headphone that performs well in most scenarios. It’s an acrobat that manages a balancing act to conform to whatever situation you use it in. But it’s a gateway headphone nonetheless.
The HD 550 is a Sennheiser launch that takes some of the flaws of the HD 500 series and improves on them, sonically speaking.
The bass and treble were improved, with a small level of refinement in the sonic signature that merits that claim.
Having heard almost every HD 500 series headphone, we can say that the HD 550 is the best-sounding one of the range.

The 2025 Meze Audio 105 SILVA is a successful addition to the 105 series, featuring a more modern design and a refreshed, contrasting tuning that enhances its technical capabilities.
This distinguishes it from the more mellow, forgiving sound of the 105 AER, which does not emphasize transients as much.
As a result, the 105 SILVA is particularly appealing for listeners who enjoy instrumentals, EDM, and house music that require clarity and energy.
The boosted clarity also enhances the listening experience for street use. Additionally, the inclusion of a USB-C adapter is a thoughtful touch for those who listen on phones and tablets, although we wish it could provide slightly more power for a meatier sound.
If you are looking for an attractive set of headphones with dynamic bass, good clarity, and sensitivity that allows it to sound clean and engaging with various sources, the efficient 105 SILVA is worth a demo.

The FiiO K13 R2R is a compelling evolution of the K11 R2R formula, addressing key limitations of its predecessor, whilst maintaining the unique R2R sound signature of the K11 R2R, and introducing an innovative 10-band PEQ with Auto EQ Support.
It’s not all positive, however. Despite its improved output power versus the K11, it’s hard to ignore the higher output power of competing R2R DAC/AMPs
Despite this, those seeking a warm, organic-sounding DAC/AMP with modern connectivity and a robust PEQ suite to fine-tune their gear’s sound should strongly consider the K13 R2R.

The FiiO SA1 performs admirably as a nearfield speaker. They let you know when they have moved past their comfort zone. Moving beyond a medium-sized room does not benefit their preferences.
Used as a desktop speaker, the SA1s are also less prone to potential placement issues. I found the pair worked best with the tweeter at ear level, but also appreciated the sound coming forth from straight desktop levels.
The degree of spaciousness coming from the soundstage shows that either of these is among its best locations. A wedge can successfully orient the speakers up a bit as well.
The best part of the accompanying app is the PEQ abilities, but this should be used in close conjunction with the placement of the speakers.
Used in appropriate situations, the FiiO SA1 is a proper nearfield or desktop speaker. Whatever shortcomings it has can be overlooked due to the excellent sonics wrought from those intimate settings and should be highly considered in this category.

The MOONDROP RAYS delivers a balanced, relaxed sound that works well for music and gaming.
Its cable adds real utility with a USB-C DSP chip, AI noise-canceling mic, and straightforward EQ access through app and browser.
Comfort is top tier, making it a solid pick for extended gaming or listening sessions without fatigue.
It delivers not only as a great gaming IEM but one that feels complete and purposeful rather than just a half-baked release with gaming slapped on the label.

When it was released, the Softears Volume S generated a lot of anticipation, and it lives up to expectations, maintaining the brand’s reputation.
While no IEM is perfect, the Volume S, despite its drawbacks, offers a well-executed tuning that will appeal to many listeners.
For someone looking for a balanced sound signature with solid bass, sweet midrange, and an inoffensive upper frequency, the Volume S is a no-brainer. The balance has been nailed, flawlessly.
In the highly competitive $300 market in 2025, the Volume S stands out due to its tuning and overall packaging. It gets an easy recommendation from us.

Kiwi Ears Étude is an entry-level IEM that features a well-balanced, lively tuning, resulting in a smooth and pleasing listening experience that is neither boring nor monotonous.
Étude may not have the best resolution or the most defined imaging, but it is among the best in its price range in terms of resolution, and the imaging is not bad either, just not the best.
It uses a vibration transducer to subtly enhance the sound by adding another layer of bass to the musical experience, good value for money, and thus recommended.
We have been observing the IEM market in the competitive, entry-level $100 price range for over a couple of years now, and seen how manufacturers strive to provide consumers with the best balance of sound quality, innovation, design aesthetics, features, and value for money.
And the Kiwi Ears Étude is a good example of that.
